About Saltrock
SALTROCK was formed in 1988 by two brothers who shared a love of surfing. The two brothers traveled to London with the sole purpose of surfing. “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” the leader said, and so everyone hopped on the next train to the seaside.
A trip to Cornwall was fantastic for two painters named Angus and Ross until they ran out of cash. T-shirts with original surf-inspired patterns were printed and sold out of the trunk of an Austin Allegro using a blackout system made of tape, nails, and a Salvation Army rug, and a printing screen made with components they begged, borrowed, and salvaged. The Saltrock surf area was a major inspiration for the creators of a new enterprise in South Africa, hence the name.
All of a sudden, the concepts took off. The brothers’ style was so unique and eye-catching that it quickly gained a devoted following among southern and western surfers, eventually leading to a shortage.
They’ve stuck with their original Devon workshop, where they make one-of-a-kind items with a surf theme.
They use the values they hold most dear to inform their own creative processes. The fact that Saltrock‘s initial customers are still wearing the brand’s vintage clothes is a testament to its durability and reliability.
